Anime Saimoe Tournament 2011 – First Preliminary Summary

The final match has just ended and Madoka does it. She gets victory number five for the Madoka girls. Here are 12 advancers to the next round:

1. Kaname Madoka (Madoka) – 459 votes

2. Index (To Aru Majutsu no Index) – 323 votes

3. Sanya V. Litvyak (Strike Witches) – 309 votes

4. Honma Meiko/Menma (AnoHana) – 303 votes

5. Yuuki Mikan (To Love-Ru) – 295 votes

6. Shinonono Houki (Infinite Stratos) – 285 votes

7. Cordelia Glauca (Milky Holmes) – 281 votes

8. Haruna (KoreZon) – 237 votes

9. Kondou Mayuka (Onii-chan no Koto Nanka Zenzen Suki janain dakara ne!!) – 170 votes

10. Shimada Hazuki (BakaTest) – 169 votes

11. Yukimura Chizuru (Hakuouki) – 167 votes

12. Kurumi Erika/Cure Marine (Pretty Cure) – 163 votes

And she does it. She easily manages to give her girls the fifth victory they were looking for, tying Saki’s record in 2009 and Haruhi’s record in 2006. And this was not some close victory, this was really a blowout. Index got second but she was over 130 votes behind Madoka. Menma didn’t even get third, getting behind Sanya. And Mikan got fifth. Seriously, Madoka. Do I see a Madoka/Homura match coming? Maybe a Sayaka/Kyouko match? Maybe even a Mami/Charlotte match? Now I’m messing with you! Though, it would be funny to see a Mami/Charlotte match.

One thing we learned from this preliminary is that Madoka is going to be a hard group to beat. All five magical girls easily made it to the main tournament. Even Charlotte managed to advance and there’s still the second preliminary to come. Does their dominance in the preliminary mean they’ll win the tournament? Not exactly.  Back in 2009, Saki managed to get 4 girls in to the final eight, but none of them made it to the final match. Of course, they had a ridiculous amount of girls. In 2006, Haruhi only managed to get one girl into the final eight, Yuki. She lost to eventual winner Suiseiseki in that round. So the biggest factor is how they fair in the drawing of the main tournament. They haven’t faced all the girls so we don’t know how they’ll fair against other girls they haven’t faced yet. They could also be placed in the same group, which could screw with them.

Another thing we learned is that the Kugyuu tsundere still has that touch. Lotte and Shana managed to get first while Aria just missed the top spot by 9 votes.

One more thing we learned is that this is not a veterans year. This year, we only had one veteran grab the top position. Even in the second and third position, there are not that many veterans this year.

Well, tomorrow is a rest day. They’ll be drawing for those left behind, but still alive. I’ll go through the first second preliminary when that comes out (or when I’m not busy).
