Akari-chan had an easy time winning this round at the end. Saki does it again by getting 3 of its girls into the next round (keep in mind that they had 8 in this group). Railgun gets one girl and one crazy sensei into the next round also. In other news, Negima barely managed to get one more girl in. This is another disappointing year for Negima (I’m guessing manga and OVA success doesn’t mean much here). They have the same girls in the first round as last year, minus Maki-chan.

So with the preliminaries round over, the real tournament starts in a couple of days. Today is the group drawing and there will be two more days of rest before the first round begins. Of the big name anime from last year, Saki and Hayate are doing a little worse than last year in terms of girls in the first round. The fact that they haven’t been on for many months didn’t help, but they are still strong. Both Railgun and K-On!! are doing better than last year (Railgun was under the Index banner last year). Railgun had more girls than Index, so they had more chances to get girls into the first round. K-On!! has the same girls as last year, plus Azu-nyan’s friend, Jun, who has more involvement in this season, and Himeko Tachibana, Yui’s classmate.

Of the new anime this year, Angel Beats!, WORKING!!, and Bakemonogatari are three of the strongest. Angel Beats! has a total of ten girls in the first round and of those ten, they have three strong contenders to get to the final eight. Yui-nyan managed to beat Index in her group and Kanade-chan and Yuri did well in their group (both of which had very strong contenders). WORKING!! has eight girls in the first round, with Poplar-chan, Mahiru, and Aoi being the strongest of those eight. Bakemonogatari did so well in the first preliminaries, that they didn’t need to fight in the second preliminary. Though they didn’t win any of the groups, all eight of its girls got in the top six. I also see Seitokai no Ichizon and Mayoi Neko Overrun!! doing well in this tournament, as long as they are not stuck with some bigger name anime in their side.

So now an explanation of the rest of the tournament. There are eight groups in this tournament. Each group will have 36 girls (one group will have 37 because of a tie in the first preliminary round) and these girls will need to go through three elimination rounds to win their group. The first round will have four girls in each match with the winner advancing. The second round and the group final will have at least three girls. In case there is a tie for first, those that are in first will advance. The winners of each group will then go to a one vs. one matchup and that goes on until we have a winner.

I will talk about my predictions when the drawings come out so until then, enjoy the rest days.
